Consulting Opportunities FAQ
Volunteering
What is the expected project duration?
We are currently conducting projects of three-month and six-month durations. The number of projects in the three-month or six-month category depends on successful client applications. All candidates should be prepared to be available for the duration of six-months. The selected candidates will be offered an option to rank the projects according to their preference. However, the Volunteer Recruitment and Retention Committee will take into consideration the needs of our clients, and the skills and experiences of our volunteers to make the final decision on the allocation of volunteers to the projects.
What is the expected time commitment?
While we expect volunteer consultants to commit around 5-10 hours per week, or 10-15 hours for engagement managers, the time commitment required fluctuates throughout the engagement. Typically, more time will be required towards the end of the three-month/six-month engagement, which can reach more than 10-15 hours per week. While most of our volunteers work or study full-time during the three-month/six-month consulting engagement, we stress that volunteering on an Endeavour engagement is an intensive commitment.
When and where do our team and client meetings take place?
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions in place, all training sessions, client meetings and team meetings will be conducted virtually.
Consulting teams schedule meetings based on the availability of team members and clients. Since most volunteers work or study full-time, team and client meetings usually take place on weekday evenings or weekends. Endeavour executives have set the expectation with clients that meetings will usually take place on a weekday evening or weekend due to the work-life of volunteers.
Once the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, meetings may take place at the client’s office. Endeavour teams may also book space at the offices of our partner, Lough Barnes Consulting Group, or at City of Toronto facilities (e.g. Metro Hall, City Hall) for meetings. Teams can choose their meeting locations, and we will provide information on how to make booking requests for the City of Toronto or Lough Barnes spaces.
When and where do orientation and training take place?
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions in place, all training sessions, client meetings and team meetings will be conducted virtually.
A list of orientation and training dates will be provided on the volunteer posting. These sessions usually take place once a month on Saturday mornings. Once the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, these sessions may take place in downtown Toronto at Metro Hall or City Hall.
Can I choose my team members?
No, the Volunteer Recruitment and Retention Committee will staff volunteers on projects by taking into consideration the diverse skills, experiences, and interests of all volunteers.
Can I choose which project I want to work on?
No, but if you are selected as a volunteer, we will ask you to fill out a Project Preference Survey and will try our best to match you with one of your top preferences. When staffing projects, the Volunteer Recruitment and Retention Committee takes into consideration the needs of our clients and the skills and experiences of our volunteers.
How many projects will I be working on?
As an engagement manager or consultant, you will work on one project during a three-month/six-month engagement. You can apply to volunteer again on another project in a future consulting round. Many of our volunteers return on the next project cycle or take a break between cycles.
Can I volunteer if I will be away for part of the consulting engagement?
We understand that volunteers may go away on vacation or for work during their consulting engagement. We stress that volunteering on an Endeavour consulting engagement is an intensive three-month/six-month commitment. As a general rule, we do not take on volunteers who will be away for more than three weeks during the consulting engagement
Do you have volunteering opportunities outside of the Greater Toronto Area?
Endeavour currently operates only in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and normally accepts applicants from the GTA since meetings are held locally and outside candidates would find it difficult to participate and be effective in the projects. However, due to COVID-19 restrictions and virtual meetings, we encourage outside applicants to apply for the current round.
We also encourage you to join Endeavour’s online community on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
Can I volunteer virtually?
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions in place, all training sessions, client meetings and team meetings will be conducted virtually.
Once the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, due to the nature of Endeavour’s consulting engagements, all volunteers will be required to participate in in-person orientation, training, review sessions, and team and client meetings.
Application
Are there any open volunteer opportunities?
Please visit the Apply page for current volunteer opportunities. We encourage you to subscribe to our mailing list and join us on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to receive the latest updates about Endeavour volunteer opportunities, educational and networking events open to the public, and more.
What is the process for returning volunteers?
Returning volunteers must submit an application, but do not have to answer the short-answer questions. You are guaranteed a spot with no interview if you have received positive feedback from your previous consulting engagement. Returning consultants who would like to be considered for an Engagement Manager position should fill out the short-answer questions for the Engagement Manager position. An interview will be required for the Engagement Manager position.
What are the resume submission requirements?
Resumes need to be in PDF format – maximum of 2 pages (or 3 pages if 10+ years of work experience). Please include volunteer, leadership, and extracurricular activities on your resume.
Can I apply if I don’t have consulting experience?
You do not require past consulting experience to apply to Endeavour consulting positions. You are an ideal candidate if you have a strong interest in helping a non-profit organization achieve its goals, can commit to a six-month consulting engagement, have good problem solving and communications skills, and can work well on a team.
Can I apply if I am a university student?
Due to a high number of applicants, Endeavour does not currently accept applications from undergraduate students. Graduate students are encouraged to apply.
Which position should I apply for?
A graduate student, recent university graduate or working professional typically joins Endeavour as a Consultant. A high-performing Consultant is often promoted to the Senior Consultant role after a successful six month engagement.
If you are an experienced professional and leader, the Engagement Manager role may be for you. The Engagement Manager motivates a diverse team of volunteers and builds relationships with clients and stakeholders to deliver solutions that make an impact. The Engagement Manager usually, but not always, has consulting experience.
A returning Consultant with positive feedback from former team members is typically promoted into the Senior Consultant or Engagement Manager position when returning to volunteer with Endeavour.
What is the interview format?
Interviews are in person and consist of behavioural and situational questions, and a non-profit case to test problem-solving skills. You will receive the case before the interview so that you can come prepared with your response – we are interested in how you solve a problem. Interviews are approximately 30 minutes and include time for you to ask questions at the end.
Will you still consider me if I send in my application past the deadline?
Since Endeavour receives a high volume of applicants, we are unable to consider applications submitted after the deadline. If you miss the deadline for a round, we encourage you to apply for the next cycle.
